Description
An outrageous pair of highly decorative French ceramic glazed pottery candlesticks by Keller & Gurin – the bases in the form of a sea dragon pursuing a bird. Japanese style signature Keller Et Guerin monogrammed to both bases.
There has been a previous repair to one of the tails, which I’ve shown a close-up of in the last image.
The Lunville factory at Saint-Clment was founded in 1730 and dedicated their production to artistic works, tableware, luxurious and decorative objects, collaborating with big names such as Auguste Majorelle and Emile Gall.
In the second half of the 19th century the factory reproduced Louis XIV objects, among them objects with very unnatural forms, where they attempted to imitate the multicoloured decorations of Strasbourg faience.
In 1892 the factory was sold to Keller and Gurin. After 1920 their production consisted of dinnerware of fine earthenware and decorative objects (animals) in craquel earthenware.
32.5cm H x 17cm diameter (9cm candle holder dish).
