Jumeaux brothers, Jean and Robert Cloutier complete their training provided at the Meaux Ceramics School by integrating various Parisian workshops, including that of Georges Jouve (1910-1974) then Pol Chambost (1906-1983).
The Cloutier brothers contributed to the renewal of French ceramics from the 1950s by creating a dream universe which is their own, always in perpetual movement and playing with biomorphic forms.
The almost funny bestiary is confusing with poetic fantasy. The parts and sculptures anthropomorphic half-decorative mid-decoration are intense in color most often monochrome or bi-chromic thus highlighting human heads partitioned in mascarons. Taurus, hens or roosters and women’s busts are often honored. Music also permeates the human body with the musician harp.
If the themes are recurrent, they are constantly revisited in the imagination of the Cloutier brothers, by approaching the notion of time passing through birth (hatching), childhood, couple, or time of the past with Hybrid beings half-man semi-bird or mid-taur, woman with a fishyy (siren) who then sends us back to mythological legends.
