Description
Magnificent pair of busts in solid exotic wood, hand carved, handcrafted from Madagascar, Malagasy woman and man couple, exceptional work, very fine details, very beautiful wood, very good quality pieces. Vintage 50s-60s or earlier. Inscription on the front under the bust of the man “Marosaranga” as well as another under the base “Ramanana” signature of the sculptor or provenance. No inscription on the woman’s but same artist. 21-22cm in height, women’s bust looks a little higher, 13-14cm in max width, 12-13cm in max depth. The man’s bust is in very good condition, with some cracks in the wood, particularly on the face and shoulders, and one at the back which is more marked. The woman’s bust is in a little worse condition at the bottom and the back, it notably has a relatively large crack at the left rear, from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the base, a few other superficial cracks, a small piece of wood missing at the back at the base of the base. Very discreet defects overall and in no way spoil the beauty of this couple. Admirable pieces of craftsmanship of uncommon quality. 2,200kg each. Inseparable couple, sold in pairs only.
