“Crowned Virgin Mary In Nevers Earthenware, 18th Century” Here is a Virgin giving birth in earthenware, probably from Nevers. It is a crowned Virgin standing on a terrace. The Virgin giving birth is a statuette frequently found in homes from the 18th to the 19th century. On the head of the Virgin, there is a hollowed-out crown at the bottom of which there is a hole two centimeters in diameter. Through this hole, holy water could be poured into the bottom of the statuette, but above all, a candle could be placed which was lit when the “labor” of the parturient began.
