Item description:
Pair of polychrome glazed and glazed ceramic bookends, depicting a seated pair of children, in full Art Deco style, signed below the base with W. Goebel’s manufactory mark in green. The pair can be dated to the early decades of the 20th century, has an excellent patina especially under the base, and is signed with mark in green and with incuse mark under the base of one of the two sculptures, and with incuse catalog number under the base of the other.
Artist and/or manufactory information:
The W. Goebel manufactory was founded in Germany in 1871; numerous marks were used by the manufactory in its long artistic production.
Latest object considerations:
The pair is made with bright colors and stylized subjects, note the boy’s bow tie and delightful straw hat, as well as the girl’s polka-dotted sweater and bonnet, all Deco-style elements.
