Description

Sculpture, polychrome hard-paste porcelain statuette, entirely hand-decorated, with pure gold trim, depicting a courtesan in eighteenth-century dress and tricorn, signed below the base in underglaze blue: “R,” mark of the German manufactory of Rauenstein. The proposed sculpture can be dated to the late 18th century from 1783 to 1800.

Information on artist and/or manufacture:
Rauenstein is a German manufactory founded in Germany in 1783 by the three Greiner brothers with a grant from Duke George de Saxe-Meiningen, who made available to them the castle of Rauenstein for the production of fine artistic porcelain with the intention of competing with the Meissen manufactory, internationally known for the quality and beauty of its porcelain, development of the decorations on pottery that made it famous.

Final thoughts on the object:
The figurine was made in a beautiful Rococo style, very similar to Anton Bustelli’s Nymphenburg sculptures. Wonderful patina, present especially under the base. Note first and foremost the beauty of the head delicately reclined to one side in the classic pose in the style of precisely Rococo, the bodice, entirely decorated at the tip of the brush by the artist, the legs slightly stubby like all those of the statuettes of the 1700s. Consider that Rauenstein’s statuettes are extremely rare, in fact we have not been able to find a single one for sale online or auctioned in recent years, not a 1700s piece in the Rococo style like this one, only much more recent stuff.
