Description

Fabulous tray with bowls and ladles for strawberries and cream or other sauces, made of vitrified majolica pottery, modeled and decorated entirely by hand. Made and signed, with engraved mark under the tray, by the very famous English manufactory of George Jones & Sons around the late 1800s. Finally, the catalog number in red is present. The service consists of a large tray, two sauce bowls and two ladles, for a total of 5 pieces. The service is made in full Art Nouveau – Art Nouveau style, with barbotine flowers, shape and coloring classic to this art movement. Each item in the service was entirely hand modeled, also note the brilliant vitrification indicating the use of feldspar-rich glazes.
From our research, the same strawberry service, but in a more barbotine-worked version and with a different coloring, is published in a volume on Georges Jones’ majolica.

Information on artist and/or manufacture:
A maker of earthenware, faience and porcelain in Stoke-on-Trent, at age 14 George Jones began a seven-year apprenticeship with Minton. After completion in 1844 he worked as a peddler for Wedgwood. George began production around 1861 as George Jones & Co. From 1872, however, he began porcelain production. In 1873 the two eldest sons, Frank Ralph Jones and George Henry Jones became partners in the business, which was renamed George Jones & Sons. “Crescent” was registered as the trademark for the new company. At that time the company had 590 employees. In 1957 George Jones & Sons Ltd ceased operations, and in 1959 the Crescent works were scrapped.
