The Spanish artist Antoni Tpies (full name: Antoni Tpies i Puig) was born on December 23, 1923 in Barcelona. His love for art and literature became evident at an early age. During the long period of recovery from lung disease, Tpies began painting and drawing. In 1944, Tapis began studying law, which he dropped out in 1946 to finally turn to art. Antoni Tpie’s early paintings are based on the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Joan Mir. After a surrealist and dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947, the painting Zoom was created, a work that was programmatic for his later work. In 1948, Antoni Tpies and others founded the artist group “Dau als Set”, of which he became the most important representative.
In 1950, Antoni Tpies received a scholarship from the French government that enabled him to stay in Paris. The first solo exhibition also took place in Barcelona in 1950. In 1951, Tpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he was in New York for a short time, where an exhibition of his works was taking place. In 1958 he took part in the Venice Biennale and thereby gained international recognition. He was represented at the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.
Antoni Tpies is considered the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixes sand, cement, marble dust and glue into his paintings. He scrapes off paint and reapplies it until the surface looks like cracked masonry. Tpies dealt intensively with Far Eastern philosophies throughout his life. In his search for expression, he integrates individual letters, signs, crosses, even objects or items of clothing. Antoni Tpie’s material and wall paintings appear mysterious and meditative. He does not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who tries to make reality understandable in his work.
In 1984 Antoni Tpies founded the “Fundaci Antoni Tpies” in Barcelona. The artist lives and works in Barcelona, well over 80 years old.
