A brilliantly executed mid-century figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden. The painting captures two elongated female figures standing in stark silhouette, each holding a basket above their heads. Their forms are rendered in an abstracted, minimalist manner, emphasising gesture over detail. The simplified architecture in the background grounds the figures in a flattened, geometric landscape that resembles desert dwellings. Strongly influenced by modernist abstraction, the work embraces a reduction of form and a keen sense of balance. The colour palette is restrained, revolving around earthy and warm tones of browns and blush. The subdued colours evoke a sense of nostalgia, while the interplay of tones adds depth to the scene.
