Katharina Bamberg came from a wealthy family in Stralsund. Her father was head of the municipal hospital and privy medical councilor. After attending the secondary school for girls in Stralsund, Katharina Bamberg went to a boarding school. She then became a student of the painter Ludwig Dettmann in Berlin. She took over realistic light painting from him.

After initially painting mostly flowers, still lifes and portraits, she dedicated her work to landscape painting. She went on study trips to Upper Bavaria, Thuringia, the Spreewald, Bornholm and the Cte d’Azur. Back in Stralsund, her hometown and the landscapes of the islands of Rgen, Vilm and Hiddensee as well as the Wittow peninsula became her motifs.

During the First World War, she voluntarily trained as a nurse in 1916 and worked as a surgical nurse in hospitals. After her return to Stralsund in November 1918, she painted again. The Blue Barn in Vitte on Hiddensee, which belonged to Henni Lehmann, became the place of her work. Along with Elisabeth Bchsel, Clara Arnheim and Elisabeth Andrae, she belonged to the Hiddenso Artists’ Association, which was dissolved in 1933 in the early days of National Socialism.

from 1945 onwards she restored many pictures damaged in the Second World War. Katharina Bamberg died on October 6, 1966 in her hometown. She was honored there at the beginning of the 21st century with the naming of Katharina-Bamberg-Strasse. Her works include: in the Stralsund Cultural History Museum. was a great-grandniece of Ernst Moritz Arndt.
