AMORUM EMBLEMATA

Splendid and fascinating original engravings by Octavius van Veen.
These finely detailed emblemata represent allegories about love, inspired by classical poetry and moral philosophy: symbolic scenes that invite reflection on the different aspects of love.

Van Veen, Flemish master and mentor of Rubens, blends artistic elegance and conceptual depth in his works, making them pieces of great value.

Burin engravings printed on laid paper.

AUTHOR : Octavius van Veen, also known as Otto Vaenius (Leiden, 1556/1558 Brussels, 1629), Flemish painter.
He became acquainted with Italian mannerist painting during his stay in Rome in 1575 and became an intermediary of this artistic language with the artists of the Netherlands.

Van Veen then received commissions from Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, third Duke of Parma and governor of the Netherlands at the time. Between 1594 and 1600 Rubens is documented as a pupil in his workshop and perhaps it was Van Veen who put Rubens in contact with Vincenzo I Gonzaga.
He distinguished himself above all for a fruitful and artistically high production of emblems
