This exquisite tapestry features the scene: “Marchands doiseaux ,” (bird merchants) the original: 18th century tapestry, kept at the Aix en Provence museum. Jean-Baptiste Leprince (1734-1781) , a painter and student of Boucher, introduced Nordic exoticism to France, a new source of inspiration in French decoration. In the series of Russian games, of which this tapestry is a part, he depicted Russians, their costumes, and their environment for the first time. This original work, (Bird denichers, the original title ) is entirely representative of the 18th century, particularly in the transparency of its light.
