Description
A wonderfully textured mid-century still life composition that presents a vibrant arrangement of everyday objects rendered with bold character, painted in oil onto board and dated 1973. At the heart of the composition is a sliced watermelon, surrounded by ripe green pears, a rustic earthenware jug, and a warm-toned plate. These elements are laid out on a richly textured white cloth, draped dramatically to heighten the sense of depth and realism. fusing realism with expressive, impasto brushwork, there is an emphasis on form and materiality rather than fine detail. The brushstrokes are thick and confident, creating dynamic surface movement and a palpable sense of texture. The artist has used a warm and earthy colour scheme, and the stark contrast between the dark background and the light cloth enhances the visual impact of the fruit and vessels. This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting has some scattered craquelure present but paint layer is very stable overall. There is also some paint loss around the signature area at the bottom left. The frame has some losses to its outer edges, but this is not noticeable from the front. Size: 68.5 x 81.5 cm (including frame)
