A wonderfully textured mid-century still life composition that presents a vibrant arrangement of everyday objects rendered with bold character, painted in oil onto board and dated 1973. At the heart of the composition is a sliced watermelon, surrounded by ripe green pears, a rustic earthenware jug, and a warm-toned plate. These elements are laid out on a richly textured white cloth, draped dramatically to heighten the sense of depth and realism. fusing realism with expressive, impasto brushwork, there is an emphasis on form and materiality rather than fine detail. The brushstrokes are thick and confident, creating dynamic surface movement and a palpable sense of texture. The artist has used a warm and earthy colour scheme, and the stark contrast between the dark background and the light cloth enhances the visual impact of the fruit and vessels.
